As part of our FFG Talente regional project “Minikosmos, ” two 2nd-grade classes from BRG Boerhaavegasse visited the Wiener Linien Remise Transportation Museum. Together with former Wiener Linien drivers, we embarked on an exciting journey through time, exploring the history of public transportation in Vienna.
From the first horse-drawn streetcars to today’s modern trains, the children were able to experience the evolution of the streetcar firsthand. They were particularly impressed by the lovingly preserved historic wooden cars. At the same time, it became clear just how much public transportation has changed: While the old vehicles offered very little space and were hardly accessible, today the focus is on comfort, safety, and accessibility.
The absolute highlight of the visit: In the bus and subway simulator, every student had the chance to step into the role of a driver and operate a vehicle.
Despite the summer-like temperatures, the field trip was a complete success. The children were able to discover many new things and gain an exciting insight into the history and technology of Vienna’s public transit system.
