In the GreenGEO project, which was launched in September 2025, key foundations for local climate risk assessment and data-driven recommendations for land-use planning were already established during the first project phase. These will now be further developed and presented and discussed collaboratively during two stakeholder workshops.
The Workshops
The online workshops will take place on Monday, March 16, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and on Thursday, March 26, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The workshops cover similar topics, and we would be delighted if you could attend one of them.
Contents
The goal is to present the current status of the work, reflect on it from a technical perspective, and further refine it through the expertise and perspectives of the participants.
Target Audiences
The workshops are aimed at representatives of the federal states, cities, and municipalities; staff members of advocacy groups, KEM/KLAR regions, and other regional (planning) networks; as well as spatial and landscape planners and other stakeholders from the fields of research, practice, and consulting. The workshops are designed to facilitate professional exchange between planning practitioners, government officials, and academics.
About the Project
GreenGEO builds upon the content and methodology of the predecessor projects Raum & Grün and RaumGrün & Gemeinden, which developed key legal, planning, and data-related foundations for integrating greening and climate change adaptation into local spatial planning. While “Raum & Grün” focused in particular on analyzing the legal and institutional framework, and “RaumGrün & Gemeinden” developed the first web-based tools for identifying local climate risks in pilot municipalities, GreenGEO now specifically aims to deepen, harmonizing, and systematically linking geodata-based information with planning measures. The goal is to transform the existing diversity of climate-relevant geodata into a consistent, planning-compatible framework.
A key focus of the work to date has been on the data sets used to derive local climate risk zones based on geospatial data. Building on freely available official geospatial data as well as satellite and remote sensing data, relevant factors such as the degree of land sealing, land cover, vegetation structure, topography, and hydrological conditions were analyzed, evaluated, and prepared for shared use. This process not only highlighted existing data potential but also identified gaps and examined methodological approaches to fill them. Initial concepts for harmonized indicators to map climate-related risks at the municipal level were developed.
At the same time, work was carried out in the area of effective green-blue adaptation measures in spatial and landscape planning to systematically compile climate risks, measures, and impact parameters. Based on scientific evidence and planning experience, green-blue measures are categorized according to their mechanisms of action, their site-specific effectiveness, and their feasibility in planning. Initial mappings between climate risks, suitable measures, and relevant local land-use planning tools have been developed and form an important foundation for the further algorithmic linking of risks and measures. The workshops offer participating institutions the opportunity to jointly reflect on these interim results, discuss assumptions and impact logic, and further develop the data foundations and assessment approaches through dialogue among government agencies, planning practitioners, and researchers.
