“Gender in Teaching (GiL)” is the first project in Austria to comprehensively address gender issues in two selected fields of study at a technical university (electrical engineering and engineering physics).
The goal was to raise awareness at various levels, develop recommendations for action regarding the integration of gender in teaching, and work toward concrete changes.
The methodological approach taken by all project participants was not to once again pinpoint the problem as lying with women, but rather to recognize and make clear that changing the structures and academic cultures of a technical university can make it more attractive to women (and also to many men).
“Gender in Teaching” was launched as part of the “Equality” project —a package of measures proposed by the Rector’s Office of the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) to the Austrian Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture (BMUKK), with the goal of increasing the proportion of women among early-career researchers and improving women’s opportunities for a (scientific) career—was implemented.
