In conjunction with the Austria-wide mobility survey “Österreich unterwegs,” we are conducting in-depth qualitative surveys on mobility. These surveys address the following questions:
- How do people’s mobility patterns differ across the various types of regions in Austria?
- What is the connection between mobility decisions and the overall workday?
- How do people organize their complex chains of routes?
- What small-scale mobility solutions have people already developed to organize their daily lives?
Lifestyles are subject to dynamic change, and the respondents are expected to live together in a wide variety of ways. The spectrum ranges from a “traditional” lifestyle (“mother-father-child”) to “single-child families” and on to “blended families” and “multilocal families,” which have received little attention in mobility research to date (that is, people in a couple relationship with a child or children who live, at least part of the time, in the same household).
The surveys are conducted in the following study regions:
- inner-city districts in Vienna
- Greater Graz Area
- Eisenstadt Metropolitan Area
- Defereggental in East Tyrol
- Waldviertel
Since January 1, 2013, the principle of results-oriented public budgeting—with particular emphasis on the goal of achieving substantive gender equality—has been enshrined in the Austrian Constitution as a national objective. The Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation, and Technology (bmvit) has set itself, among other goals, the objective of “ensuring gender equity in mobility and equal access for women and men to all transportation services.” This study provides the bmvit and the federal states with a foundation intended to contribute to the realization of gender budgeting goals and the impact-oriented use of public funds.
