{"id":12760,"date":"2005-09-01T10:30:12","date_gmt":"2005-09-01T08:30:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.b-nk.at\/uncategorized\/lecture-at-tu-wien-gender-and-technology\/"},"modified":"2026-07-16T10:33:42","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T08:33:42","slug":"lecture-at-tu-wien-gender-and-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.b-nk.at\/en\/projekte-en\/gender-dimensionen-in-forschungsinhalten-en\/lecture-at-tu-wien-gender-and-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Lecture at TU Wien: Gender and Technology"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the summer semester of 2006, Bente Knoll has been teaching an introductory lecture at TU Wien on \u201cGender and Technology.\u201d The relevance of the category of \u201cgender\u201d in technology is highlighted and made visible at various levels within and through the course. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This course provides an overview of the current state of the debate on \u201cGender in Engineering.\u201d Using selected examples, key areas of research are discussed, and the topic is examined from three perspectives: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cWomen in Science and Technology\u201d: Structural and Symbolic Barriers for Women in These Fields, Proposed Solutions for Entry and Professional Development<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cScience and Technology of Gender\u201d: The Production and Determination of Genderings and Gender Differences in Technological Artifacts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cGender in Science and Technology\u201d: meta-analytic approaches to research practice and methodology in the technical sciences; mechanisms of gendering in technical fields of inquiry; theory-building; methods; interpretations of results; and research practices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Course Content:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Introduction to Gender Theories: Context, Definitions, Debates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feminist Critique of Technology: Approaches, Methods, Key Research Questions; Introduction to Gender Theories: Context, Definitions, Debates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Women in Science and Technology 1 \u2013 Women&#8217;s Contributions to Science and Technology Throughout History<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Women in Science and Technology 2 \u2013 Women Engineers Today: Socialization, College, Profession, Career<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Technology and Constructions of Masculinity, or: \u201cThe Engineer\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gender and Academic Cultures, or: \u201cWhat Is Electrical Engineering?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Representations of Technology and Engineering<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gender Analysis of Technological Artifacts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gender and Technology Assessment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gender Policy Strategies: Managing Gender and Diversity\/Anti-Discrimination<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gender Perspectives in SET (Science, Engineering, and Technology)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After completing the course, students should be able to draw connections to their own academic discipline.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since the summer semester of 2006, Bente Knoll has been teaching an introductory lecture at TU Wien on \u201cGender and Technology.\u201d The relevance of the category of \u201cgender\u201d in technology is highlighted and made visible at various levels within and through the course.
